“He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” -Mark 16:15-16
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” -Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213
At Saint Peter Catholic Church we seek to follow the mandate of Christ when he said, “Go therefore and baptize all nations in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” We believe that it is through the baptism of water and the Holy Spirit that a person is saved. If you are an unbaptized adult and you would like to learn more about receiving this great gift, please see our Adult Formation page.
How do I schedule a Baptism?
If you are expecting a child or already have a child that you would like baptized please contact Father at (608) 831-4843. You can schedule a baptism even before a child is born. We encourage all children to be baptized in their first few weeks, emphasizing the power and gift that we receive at Baptism. Before your child is baptized you will need to select two godparents and meet with Father to learn more about the responsibilities and graces received at baptism.
How do I pick Godparents?
We all have friends that we would love to honor by making them godparents of our children. Knowing the role of the godparents can help us pick a man and woman ready to take on this responsibility. It is the duty of the godparents to teach the Catholic faith to their godchildren, thus ideally both godparents are baptized Catholics who know the faith that they are responsible for teaching to your child.
How do I prepare for Baptism?
Baptism preparation teaches new parents about this great gift given by God. Baptism preparation is also a time for the parents themselves to consider receiving other sacraments such as Confirmation, Marriage, Reconciliation and the Eucharist. If the child’s parents are not married or confirmed please let Father know. Father would like to meet with the parent or parents of the child at least once before the baptism, or even before the birth if desired. Please call Father at (608) 831-4843 to choose a time to meet.
